Ranch House Renovations
Chappel Hill, Texas
This update of a 20-year-old kitchen and breakfast area in a ranch house, reconfigured the space to create a comfortable and cozy room for cooking, informal dining, and quiet relaxation. The client wanted the interior aesthetics to combine their refined tastes with an expression of the home’s rural location.
Upchurch Architects worked within the 22-by-33-foot block that included the kitchen, breakfast room, pantry and storage rooms, and a connecting hallway, removing all interior walls and creating a space that weaves cooking, dining and casual living together. A new east-facing bank of windows overlooking the front of the property and pastures beyond provides clear views from all corners of the room and washes the unobstructed space in abundant natural light. In addition to the large kitchen island and counters that wrap around two walls, the room includes a fireplace, TV, and comfortable seating, creating the feeling of a home within a home, a single room where the couple gathers for a variety of activities throughout the day.
Recycled timbers add a warm layer of rustic, ranch character while accommodating the structural requirements of the large room. The project extended to include an additional hall and closet spaces, and the renovation of a guest bathroom to update and add a shower.
